Electricity Generation using Natural Gas - a Step towards Achieving a Sustainable Global Energy Future
Summary
The growing use of natural gas for power generation is a viable option for easing environmental stress as it replaces coal. Coal constitutes the majority of the current thermal generation mix. Falling gas prices, triggered mainly by the discovery of large amounts of unconventional gas resources, have helped gas to regain market competitiveness as a cleaner, more efficient resource for power generation. With its advantages over other fossil fuels, the discovery of huge unconventional resources, and a raft of energy policies across different geographies, the use natural gas in power generation and its trade have been influenced immensely. Despite the discovery of vast gas resources, the use of gas is limited by the amount of resources available. However, there is an increasing interest in gas as a back-up source while countries work to increase the reliability of renewable energy resources. The rising interest in power generators is driven by the growing need for ways to ease the integration of renewable energy resources with improved reliability. Using proven gas-fired generation technology as a back-up for intermittent renewable energy resources will not only enhance the reliability of the power supply, it will also act as an important step towards achieving a sustainable global energy future.
Scope
- Market prospects of electricity generation using natural gas and its role in achieving a sustainable energy future
- Key issues influencing the changing role of natural gas in the global power mix
- Future and current market potential offered by gas fired power generation as compared to other generation sources
