Summary
Mexico accounted for a third of the world’s silver production over the last 500 years and was the world’s largest silver producer until 2008. Currently, Mexico is the world’s second-largest silver producer, behind Peru. Some of the most notable silver mines in Mexico include the Fresnillo mine, the Alamo Dorado mine and the La Colorada mine, with the latter two both being owned by Pan American Silver Corp, a silver producer based in Canada. Historically, silver mining has been concentrated in the company’s ”Silver Belt”, which stretches from Guanajuato and Zacatecas in the Mesa Central to Chihuahua in the Mesa del Norte. In terms of dominant companies, Fresnillo plc was spun off from its parent company Industrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V. in 2008 and emerged as the world’s largest producer of primary silver during the review period, as well as being a key producer of lead, gold and zinc in Mexico.
